Learn how to remove hood from hoodie smoothly. This simple sewing project is perfect for beginner sewist. It’s not too complicated and it’s straightforward, and you can give a new life to your ugly or old hooded pullover.

If you’re like me and the bulky hood bothers you, then you could find this blog post along with the DIY sewing tutorial beneficial to you, but I can’t promise you anything. I will walk you through this process though, with friendly step by step instruction on how to turn hooded sweatshirt into snug and cozy pullover.

It’s good to know how to remove hood from hoodie

How often do you find yourself shopping online and finding that AWESOME sale with a free shipping on top? And you buy that perfect hoodie with the gigantic kangaroo pocket. Only to find out later, that you’re going to toss it in the corner of your closet or donate it.

I get disappointed every time when I buy a super cute and warm hoodie and then, after running it couple of times through the washing and drying machine it becomes stiff and uncomfortable to wear or it shrinks. At that point, I usually give the old and ugly clothes a makeover.

ESSENCIAL SUPPLY

For this clothing alteration, you will need:

  • scissors
  • seam ripper
  • measuring tape or ruler
  • thread and needle
  • sewing machine (optional)
  • bit of time
  • flat workable surface

Here are simple steps how to remove hood from hoodie fast

FIRST STEP

Assess your options.

Take a good look at the neck opening and decided what is the best and easiest option for you to remove the hood.

Sometimes, all it takes, is to completely cut off the hood. To do this, cut around entire hood above the seamline.

You can see my DIY video tutorial here how to do this effectively and efficiently.

But, if for any reasons, this option is not an option, then most likely it will require little bit of work.

Start by unpicking the stitch that’s holding the hoodie attached to the sweatshirt at the neck line. Be sure to do this carefully so, you won’t damage the fabric.

Once you remove the hood, the next step is to finish off the neckline.

You can sew a pretty and comfortable crew neck or high neck, if you prefer.

SECOND STEP

Sewing the neckband.

Let’s say you decided to create crew neck, so then you have to measure from the shoulder point all around the neck opening.

Next, take this measurement and create pattern piece to cut the fabric for the neckband.

You can cut the neckband piece out of the existing hood facings or you can cut it out of a different fabric.

Now, you place one shorter end of the fabric over the other shorter one, right sides touching each other, and sew it with a straight stitch or hand backstitch it.

You can sew this seam by hand sewing or with sewing machine.

THIRD STEP

Sewing the band to the neck opening.

Again, place the neckband and the sweatshirt right sides of the fabrics touching each other.

Start at the shoulder point or at the middle of the back-line of the sweatshirt.

Attach it with pins or run a basting stitch to keep these two temporarily together.

Finally, if you have a sewing machine, then you can use it now to sew the band to the neckline.

However, if you don’t have the sewing machine , no problem, you can do this by hand sewing with backstitch technique.

FOURTH STEP

Finishing touch.

In addition, if you have the serger sewing machine you can quickly run the neckline seam through it, to further secure and clean it. But no worries if you don’t have it. There are other alternatives.

On regular sewing machine use the zig-zag option instead, this way you can also secure the stitch from fraying.

Finally, for all hand sewists out there, to prevent the edge of the seam from further fraying use blanket stitch in hand sewing techniques.

Also, it’s a good idea to top stitch the neck line all around with a simple straight stitch.

This can be done both, mechanical and manually.

Additionally, if you choose to be extra creative, you can embroider a decorative stitch all around the new neckline to make it look pretty.
