Is it a bad idea to turn annoying turtleneck to crew neck perfectly fitting new neckline sweater?

Even though sweaters come in all different colors and sizes, and we get to choose the best and most perfect one, but for some reason they are not fitting properly later on. Sometimes it happens after washing the garment only once. And this is when transforming turtleneck to crew neck hacks comes super useful.

In this sewing tutorial I will share with you a sewing hack, how I got rid of the highneck collar on my sweater. In my case I decided to cut off the high neck collar as it was bothering me too much. And after this sewing alteration, I have to say that I am very happy with the new collar. More about this in the video below.

One can argue that, turtleneck sweaters, and specifically merino wool sweaters are super warm for the cold and chilly days.

So, why bother with turtleneck to crew neck conversion or making it into mock neck?

Well, it all depends on your likings. I can love one turtleneck top that is beautifully made and care less about similar one.

Some turtle neck collars can be too itchy. Like for example the sweaters made of merino wool, or tight fitting high neck seaters can be annoying as well.

Regardless of the reasons why some are against turtle necks collar sweaters, let’s dive deeper into this sewing alteration, and explore the difficulty in changing a collar on a sweater, and sewing supplies needed to transform turtleneck to crew neck.

Difficulty; beginner friendly

Useful Sewing Supplies:

– measuring tape

– tailors chalk or marking pan

– scissors

– embroidery floss or yarn or sewing thread

– straight pins

– pressing iron

– ironing pressing board

– sewing machine (optional)

During the time that, I did this turtleneck to crew neck sewing alteration, I made it completely by hand, and without a sewing machine.

Still, if you have a sewing machine, you can speed up the process and use it, but it’s optional.

When I make turtleneck collars sewing alteration, I like to look at the neck opening and finishing band around the neck first to figure out how to finish it off later.

STEP 1.

Measure how much of the tight turtle neck to cut off.

Add about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch for seam allowance.

STEP 2.

Draw a cutting line and sewing line and fold line

Step 3.

Cut the turtleneck collar off at the cutting line.

STEP 4.

Use base stitch to keep the collar from over stretching

STEP 5.

Secure the raw edges of the remaining turtleneck collar with overlock stitch or blanket stitch

STEP 6.

Divide the neck opening into four equal length and mark the middle points

STEP 7.

Fold in the remaining turtleneck collar to create crew neck and secure it with straight pins

Or base stitch around neckline band.

STEP 8.

Use whip stitch to sew all turtleneck layers together to form new round neckline.

STEP 9.

Press down the new crew neck area; set iron to proper temperature setting

Also, this sewing alteration works well with cowl necks, or shawl collars, or even with mock turtlenecks.

If by any chance the altered crewneck sweater neck line is too big and not how you like it, it can be adjusted. It will result in smaller size necklines.

So, here you have a simple change of turtleneck to crew neck video.
